San Juan Island and Friday Harbor
San Juan Island & Friday Harbor Real Estate: Public education on the island is provided by the San Juan School District. Friday Harbor Elementary School, Friday Harbor Middle School and Friday Harbor High School have a combined enrollment of about 1,000.

The natural features of San Juan Island are captivating. Dense forests, shimmering lakes, rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, and a dizzying diversity of wildlife attract many visitors each year. These visitors usually seek refuge from the stresses and noise of the city. They find that refuge and more, and some of these visitors return to make San Juan Island their home.

Natural points of interest include the San Juan Island National Historical Park, Mount Young, Mount Finlayson, the shoreline and the underwater habitats just off the coast. The San Juan Island National Historical Park was once the site of two opposing military encampments: the American Camp and the English Camp. Today, these ‘camps’ are the island’s two largest parks, covering a total of more than 1,700 acres. Both are used for hiking, picnicking and beachcombing. From the English Camp, visitors can hike 650 feet up to Mount Young, where the views are breathtaking. From the American Camp, one can access the trail that winds up Mount Finlayson. Other destinations in the American Camp are the tide pools of South Beach and the Fourth of July Beach on Griffin Bay.

San Juan County has many miles of shoreline, so it isn’t surprising that water sports play a big role in the island lifestyle. San Juan Island is a popular spot for cold water divers, who enjoy exploring the kelp, sea anemones and Pacific octopi that live in the region. Other means of enjoying the island waters are kayaking, boating, fishing and whale watching.

Whale watching is made possible by the orca whales that live off the west side of San Juan Island. The island’s Lime Kiln Point State Park is a popular viewing point; the site attracts more than 100,000 people each year hoping to glimpse the mighty orcas splashing in the waters. Those interested in more information about the local whale population should visit the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor. Besides being a source of information to the visiting public, the museum is also a reputable research facility.

San Juan Island also has many educational and cultural opportunities. In addition to the Whale Museum, there is a historical museum in Friday Harbor and visitor center at the San Juan Island National Historical Park. Art enthusiasts will enjoy perusing the independent art galleries in Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor. As well, the San Juan Community Theatre hosts a variety of dance, music and dramatic performances.
